  • What is microneedling exactly?

Microneedling is a procedure in which the body's own regeneration helps to create a more beautiful, firmer and more even complexion. Tiny channels are pricked into the skin with the help of very small and fine needles. These small injuries are perceived by the body as damage and the body's own "measures for healing" are initiated. The tiny injuries are closed with the skin's own "building blocks". Thanks to the collagen used by your own body and hyaluronic acid, wound healing has a regenerating effect on the complexion. The tiny injuries in the skin's surface allow creams to be better absorbed and penetrate the skin directly. Microneedling treatment is almost painless. Redness will appear after execution. These testify to the strong effect that microneedling produces on the skin. The blood flow increases rapidly so that the body's own building blocks reach the surface of the skin where the microneedling was used. The body's own healing process is thus ignited. The redness disappears within a short time, in rare cases it can last up to four days. Growth factors are released as a result of the injuries. Thanks to cell renewal and elastic building materials, the skin becomes firmer and smoother after the treatment. The effectiveness of microneedling has been proven in several scientific studies. The examinations of the treated tissue revealed that the newly formed cells in the skin tightened the skin. After a microneedling treatment, the skin should be allowed to rest for two days.

General information about microneedling at our urban spa in Hamburg

The so-called derma roller has become really well known. This scooter is equipped with a roller that is riddled with many small needles. These have a defined length and thickness. This is rolled over the skin areas that should benefit from the effect of microneedling. Another method for microneedling is the use of a DermaPen. This is an electric model on which the needles are attached. With this procedure, the treatment can be optimally adapted to the respective skin type and the skin area to be treated, since the needle length can be varied.

    What is microneedling used for?

The use of microneedling is very versatile. In cosmetics, mainly aged skin is treated with the help of microneedling. These are, for example, wrinkles or sagging areas of skin that gain elasticity as a result of the treatment. But it also serves to prevent skin aging. Other skin problems can be treated, such as pigment disorders. In the case of hair loss, microneedling can have a reactivating effect on the hair roots.

Microneedling can "reanimate" the properties of the connective tissue and have a constructive effect. Cellulite and stretch marks as well as stretch marks can be successfully treated with microneedling. Flabby or weak connective tissue can be helped to rebuild. Significant improvements are already visible after the first treatment, but they cannot be completely eliminated.

Microneedling is also used to effectively treat scars. Acne can cause deep scars, but these can be significantly minimized. Surgical scars can also be reduced. The scar tissue can form new, tiny blood vessels through microneedling, which in turn lead to a natural coloring of the skin. Growing scars can be reduced. Scars from burns can be improved. Hardened scars can soften. However, depending on the condition of the skin, scar treatment with microneedling can take several months. If you are not sure how microneedling will affect your skin, make an appointment and we will advise you on your possible treatment success.

The length and durability of the therapeutic success

The success of the therapy and the duration depend on the type of treatment. The more intensive the microneedling, the greater the visible success. The regeneration properties of the treated skin also play a major role. But the biggest difference lies in skin rejuvenation or scar treatment. If “sunken” scars are treated, the therapy can be a lasting success. For skin rejuvenation, it is recommended to repeat a treatment every three months. The result can be maintained for up to three years. How the microneedling affects your skin can be assessed after the first assessment.

This is how the microneedeling treatment works in our urban spa Hamburg

The treatment itself is almost painless. After disinfecting the skin areas that are treated with microneedling, there is the possibility of local anesthesia. This is achieved using an anesthetic cream that takes 30 minutes to take effect. The microneedling is then painless. This is followed by further disinfection of the skin areas before the treatment begins.

The microneedling procedure is performed with a DermaPen. This is an electric model on which the needles are attached. The DermaPen moves the needles, while the DermaPen itself is only guided over the skin area to be treated. The speed enables a very intensive treatment. The needles are sterile and used only once. In contrast to the well-known derma rollers, this method offers several advantages: How deep these needles penetrate can be precisely adjusted. In addition, much more precise stitches are placed in the skin, since the needles penetrate the skin vertically through the DermaPen. The speed is also adjustable.
All in all, it is possible to have a more targeted effect on the different skin areas on the face. The skin on the forehead is not as strong as the skin on the cheeks. The treatment can be adjusted exactly to the skin area. The speed and depth of penetration create tiny wounds in the form of channels in the skin. Active substances that support the healing process and regeneration can penetrate deeper into the skin through these channels. These are creams or ointments with helpful active ingredients. For this purpose, hyaluronic acid or vitamins, for example, are applied during the treatment. They support and enhance the skin-tightening effect. A treatment can take around 30-60 minutes. After the treatment, the skin is cleaned.

    The benefits of microneedling

The first visible effect of the skin tightening can be seen shortly after the treatment. The skin feels revitalized and firmer. Microneedling has a long-term effect. Stimulating the formation of new collagen in the skin is a lengthy process. The process of regeneration continues for weeks or months. The final result of the treatment can be seen after four months at the latest. In order to achieve an optimal result, a treatment can then be repeated. Just one day after the treatment, the wrinkle depth is visibly reduced. The complexion is firmer and appears rejuvenated. After a few weeks, fine, small wrinkles can be smoothed out and gone. Dark skin pigmentation may lighten or disappear. The treated skin areas are better supplied with blood through cell renewal and skin structure. Stretch marks are significantly reduced and are less noticeable as they return to the previous, more natural skin colour. Flabby areas of skin regain firmer tension. The scar treatment has a lasting effect and does not have to be repeated over and over again. We would be happy to inform you personally about the benefits you can expect from our microneedling treatment.

Areas of application on the skin

Microneedling is mainly used on the face. But the neck and décolleté can also be freed from wrinkles. The scalp can be treated to stimulate hair growth. The connective tissue on the buttocks and thighs can be smoothed.

    For whom is it suitable?

In principle, it is suitable for anyone who is striving for a healthier, more even and younger complexion. Microneedling relies on the skin's own regeneration processes. As long as there are no health problems or illnesses, it is suitable for everyone. We will be happy to advise you if you are not sure whether microneedling is suitable for you.

    Possible risks and side effects

As a rule, microneedling only causes reddening of the skin, which is evidence of the necessary blood circulation for the healing process that has begun. Swelling can also occur. Possible edema subsided after two days. Light or small hematomas (bruising) will heal within a few days. Microneedling, or the use of needles, penetrates the protective skin barrier. Before the treatment, the skin areas are disinfected. Only sterile needles are used for the treatment. Finally, the skin is cleaned. Nevertheless, in very rare cases, inflammation or infection can occur. If you are taking blood-thinning medication such as ibuprofen, aspirin or similar, treatment should not be recommended, as the skin is more prone to bruising.

What should be considered after the treatment?

Since microneedling causes tiny injuries to the skin, it is somewhat sensitive during the healing process. The redness and possible swelling that occurs depends on the treatment. However, these can be covered with makeup. If the microneedling is carried out with longer needles and carried out more intensively, the reactions are all the greater. After the treatment, the skin should be allowed to rest for two days.

The skin needs to rebuild itself, but before that happens, extensive sunbathing should be avoided for at least three weeks after the treatment. Solariums should also be avoided. The treated skin areas are sensitive to UV radiation, which could damage the skin areas all the more as the healing process is still ongoing. Sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 is recommended when you are outdoors. This should be applied for up to a week after treatment. If possible, you should avoid anything that particularly stresses the skin for several days after the treatment. This is, for example, a visit to the sauna or sports.

When is the first treatment success visible?

The reddening of the skin reaches its peak shortly after the treatment and usually subsides after a short time. In rare cases, this can take up to four days. After about seven days, the treated skin areas are clearly refreshed. However, the regeneration process lasts longer. Depending on the reason for the treatment, microneedling can be repeated after a while to increase the effect. As a rule, further treatments are carried out to achieve a really optimal result. Between three and eight treatments are recommended. These can be perceived at intervals of about three to six weeks. The goal of the treatment is kept in mind and the skin condition is taken into account before the next treatment.

Younger skin responds more clearly after the first treatment. Here it can be observed that the small wrinkles can be eliminated quickly and effectively. The tightening and smoothing of the skin can be clearly seen and felt after the first treatment. Older skin has lost some of its own regenerative power. Here it takes a little longer until the first successes are visible because the skin reacts more slowly. After several sessions, however, mature skin also gains more elasticity and vitality.

When is a microneedling treatment not recommended?

Microneedling should not be performed on acute herpes infections, as these viruses can spread to new areas of the skin. Treatment should also be avoided in the case of acute acne. No treatment should be given to sunburn. It should also be avoided in the case of wounds or pustules. If the skin is very oily or if there is pronounced rosacea, treatment could worsen the complexion. Microneedling should not be used for skin diseases that are inflammatory. Treatment is generally not recommended for HIV patients or hepatitis patients. But it is also not recommended for skin cancer, diabetes mellitus or severe high blood pressure. Microneedling should be avoided if there is a tendency to scar growth or keloid formation. Microneedling should be avoided during cortisone therapy. Microneedling must not be performed when taking medication that has a blood-thinning effect, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, marcumar, gingko, high-dose vitamin E, ASA or similar medication. There must be no allergy to the local anesthetics used.
